In more ways than one, balloon sinuplasty is proving to be a source of relief for chronic sinusitis sufferers across the country.

The FDA-approved medical procedure is not only a simple treatment available to patients in a doctor's office, it is also now likely to be covered by insurance, greatly reducing the out-of-pocket costs for those in desperate need of relief.

“Treating sinusitis can have significant financial impact over time when multiple over-the-counter medications, antibiotics, steroids are having to be purchased to manage,” said Diana Ruiloba, physician assistant at Arizona Breathe Free Sinus & Allergy Centers. “Multiple medical visits to get symptoms managed can lead to significant cost. Sinusitis flareups are leading to your having to take days off from work or school (and) this can be substantial over time.”

Medical News Today reports that balloon sinuplasty is intended for chronic rhinosinusitis patients who have found little relief from other medical procedures. Balloon sinuplasty is minimally invasive. The doctor inserts a tiny balloon into the sinus cavity, which is then expanded to open the sinuses and help the patient breathe better.

A condition that’s often caused by viral and bacterial infections and occasionally structural issues, sinusitis includes facial discomfort, inflammation of the sinuses, nasal discharge, pain in the bridge of nose, headache and fatigue.

The American Sinus Institute reports that the number of sinusitis sufferers across the country is in the neighborhood of 37 million, with more women than men affected by sinus issues.

Balloon sinuplasty is no longer considered an experimental or elective surgery and is customarily covered by insurance, according to GoodRx Health. The procedure is less expensive in the doctor's office when compared a hospital setting.
