At Arizona Breathe Free Sinus & Allergy Centers, an outpatient procedure called balloon sinuplasty can clear a patient's blocked sinuses quickly, according to otolaryngologist Dr. John Stewart.

"It's offered in the office, which means no hospitals, and those extra hidden fees are avoided," Stewart said. "This procedure is minimally invasive, safe, painless, fast and effective. It typically takes around 30 minutes, and then you are on your way back home."

A catheter with a small balloon attached is inserted into the sinus cavity and then slowly inflated, opening the blocked passageway, according to Healthline.

"This is an appropriate intervention for sinuses that are no longer functioning optimally," said Diana Ruiloba, a physician assistant at Arizona Breathe Free. "This procedure, on average, takes about 30 to 40 minutes, which conveniently can be done in the office. Overall, a great procedure to help improve quality of life by giving you an opportunity to breathe your best."

Balloon sinuplasty was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2005, according to Healthline. It's usually recommended for patients with chronic sinusitis who have been unable to find relief with other treatments. Balloon sinuplasty is also known as "balloon catheter dilation surgery." But balloon sinuplasty is still a type of sinus surgery, and it carries the same kinds of risks as other types of sinus surgery.

Balloon sinuplasty is fairly straightforward, and associated complications are minimal, Healthline said. Patients are usually back to normal within a day or two, and some people are even able to drive themselves home after the procedure.
