People who are suffering from sinus problems are far from alone.
An estimated 28.9 million people in the United States are enduring the same miserable symptoms, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That’s about 11.6% of the adult population, leading to 4.1 million annual trips to the doctor’s office, where chronic sinusitis is the primary diagnosis.
“Chronic sinusitis can have many significant consequences to one’s health,” said Dr. John Stewart of Arizona Breathe Free Sinus & Allergy Centers. “If left untreated, it can affect not only one’s nasal passageways and respiratory system, but your cardiovascular health as well.”
Eventually, chronic sinusitis can lead to nasal obstruction, which can cause sleep apnea, Stewart said.
“Subsequently, if sleep apnea is left untreated, it can negatively impact the heart, causing heart arrhythmias (such as atrial fibrillation) and stroke,” he said.
During a one-year period, there were up to 73 million restricted-activity days related to sinusitis and total direct medical costs of almost $2.4 billion, not including surgery or radiographic imaging, according to a study by the National Institutes of Health.
“Unresolved sinusitis becomes a quality-of-life issue, taking people away from their jobs, family, friends and obligations,” Stewart said.
Fortunately, there are now advanced options to diagnose and treat sinusitis, and Arizona Breathe Free is at the forefront of offering the quality care that patients deserve as they struggle to overcome their breathing issues.
Early intervention can lower the need for medical care in the future, according to a study published by the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
