Many people who suffer from sinus problems don’t realize that allergies can be the cause of their misery.
“Allergies can be a constant struggle, especially out here in the Arizona desert and mountains,” Dr. John Stewart of Arizona Breathe Free Sinus and Allergy Center, which opened in September in Scottsdale, said.
The center offers two types of testing for allergies, blood tests known as RAST and a skin scratch test.
“With the scratch test you get instant results and a treatment plan can be coordinated immediately based on your individual test results," Stewart said.
One form of treatment Stewart recommends is allergy drops (sublingual immunotherapy).
It is convenient, safe and reliable, Stewart said. Many patients prefer allergy drops to allergy shots, he said.
One advantage is that drops are produced from all-natural extracts of allergens such as pet dander, mold, dust, and pollen. The drops are administered in small doses, reducing the possibility of an allergic reaction to the treatment.
Drops are just as effective as shots in reducing symptoms, according to the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. Drops also work much more quickly than shots. They can begin helping within four weeks, compared to four months for shots.
Another advantage is that unlike shots, drops don't require a clinic visit. You can administer them yourself at home, work or even while traveling. This also lowers the number of insurance co-pays for clinic visits.
